BBC reports that the EgyptAir plane was hijacked and forced to divert to Larnaca airport on the south coast of Cyprus. Fire outbreak at the Total Filling Station beside Sharaton Hotel on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Lagos

Today, a major fire outbreak was averted at the Total Filling Station (Onigbongbo) on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way in Lagos after a motorcycle exploded in flames by one of the pumps. Eyewitnesses at the scene confirm that an altercation started today after the staff of the station refused to sell product to cars, they chose to sell to motorcycles and individuals with kegs instead. This lead to a fight, before a motorcycle, for unknown reasons, caught flames. The spot where the fire was put out, showing the white patches created by the fire extinguisher. The flames were quickly extinguished, though the motorcycle was completely burnt. Moments later, officers of the Nigerian Army flooded the scene to disperse the crowd in an attempt to curb the rising tension.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) Ebenezer Babatope, has expressed confidence that the party will send the administration of President Muhammadu packing in the 2019 general elections. Presdent Buhari has been faulted for allowing the DSS and the EFCC harass opposition politicians under the guise of fighting corruption. Babatope, made the statement in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, March 10, when he paid a visit to Governor Ayo Fayose to show solidarity over the alleged invasion of the Ekiti state House of Assembly and arrest of four lawmakers, by the Department of State Service (DSS). According to The Nigerian Eye, Babatope said the comeback of the PDP in 2019 was already predicted by the party’s victories in the recent elections. Boko Haram attack in Pulka and Bitta by Nigerian Army troops

At the end of the debacle, 2 Boko Haram insurgents paid for their atrocities with their lives while several others sustained gunshot injuries. The fate that befell those that attacked Pulka was more dreadful. The ever ready and vigilant troops rose to the occasion by repelling the attacks and killing all the 16 attackers and captured one of them alive during the exploitation. The gallant troops also recovered 11 AK-47 rifles, 3 General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), 1 Browning Machine Gun (BMG) and 2 Toyota Hilux vehicles. Others are a 60mm Mortar tube, 7 boxes of 12.7mm ammunition and 1 belt of 12.7mm ammunition. It is gratifying to state that there were no casualty on our own troops except for 3 soldiers that sustained minor injuries. Lagos Assembly wants Ambode to relocate market

Following the crisis in the Mile 12-Ketu area of Lagos State last week, the State House of Assembly has called on the state government to consider relocating the Mile 12 market. Reacting to the crisis that occurred in the market last week, where some people lost their lives and properties, the House said that the incident was unfortunate and could be avoided. The Assembly consequently called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to relocate Mile 12 and Owode Onirin Markets after conducting necessary feasibility studies and when accompanying infrastructures must have been provided. While commiserating with the families of those who lost their lives in the incident, the House condemned the killings and the attitude of soldiers stationed at the market, who could not prevent the crisis. The rate of political killings in Rivers State continues to rise as rival groups murder their opponents. Yesterday, political thugs in Buguma, Rivers State, beat a popular APC leader Ofingite Amachree to pulp before setting him ablaze. The graphic photo is shared here . Later, yesterday, the ‘mass executions’ continued and another middle-aged man, popularly known as Kpom-Kpom was brutally murdered and set on fire by another set of political thugs. The tension, reportedly, is high in Rivers State and nothing has been done to curb it. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command busted a criminal group who reportedly stole tyres valued at N20 million. PUNCH reports that the suspects include a 61-year-old blind man, Monday Iruanya. Others were identified as John Michael, Charles Chinoso and James Francis. The goods were stolen from a warehouse in Apapa and were being transported to Sagamu, but they were intercepted by the police at Ijebu-Ode who had trailed them from Lagos.

Ambode hires 1,200 teachers as retired LUTH cleaner donates pension to Buhari, IDPs

Lagos state Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the employment of 1,200 primary school teachers in a bid to improve the quality of primary education in the state. Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), Dr Ganiyu Oluremi Sopeyin, who disclosed the governor’s approval in his office on Monday, said that the gesture was part of ongoing efforts of the current administration to improve the quality of education. Sopeyin explained that successful candidates were selected through a transparent examination process of international standard. While congratulating successful candidates who would be joining other teachers, the SUBEB boss urged them to reciprocate government’s good gesture by putting in their best in the State Public Service.

Non-remittance of dues: Niger State APC suspends its Federal Legislators

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State has suspended all but four of  its federal legislators over their failure to pay dues to the party, Channels Television is reporting. The state secretary of the party, Barrister Mohammed Liman, said three senators and six members of the House of Representatives are suspended because they have refused to pay their dues till date. H said only four out of the 13 legislators have been paying dues.  “The constitution of our party is very clear on it, it says any member or political appointee that came into being through the platform of our party and fails to pay his dues is technically not a member of the party. “The constitution says you must pay your dues as and when due. This means technically they have suspended themselves,” he said. ‎He stated further; “‎Those we elected did not deem it fit to support the party financially, and how do they want the part to move on?

Abducted Lagos schoolgirls rescued; kidnappers arrested

– The Lagos state police command has confirmed the rescue of three abducted schoolgirls – The kidnappers were apprehended by the police as part of the rescue mission The police, in an overnight rescue operation, have freed the three schoolgirls of the Lagos Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School in Ikorodu.   The girls were found at the Igbokuta area of Ikorodu. They are unharmed and were not molested by their kidnappers. Three arrests have been made in connection with the crime, according to the police spokesperson. A press conference dedicated to the events is to be held by the Lagos state government and security agencies at the State House, Alausa, by 2pm. Timilehin Olosa, Tofunmi Popoolaniyan and Deborah Akinayo were kidnapped from a classroom in the Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School on February 29. Ogun communities protest 10 years of darkness and neglect by government

Residents of Ibafo and Magboro and other communities in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun gathered with placards in front of the office of Punch newspaper and along the Lagos -Ibadan expressway to protest 10 years without power and a complete neglect by the government. The protesters who blocked the expressway, causing traffic gridlock say their communities lack social amenities. Singing solidarity songs, they urged the government to provide basic amenities in the area before the rainy season. The leader of the group, Funsho Olawepo, warned that the protest may escalate if nothing was done in the next seven days. Price of crude oil rises up to $40 per barrel

There seems to be a ray of hope for the Nigerian economy as the price of crude oil continues to ride steadily. According to Business Day Online, oil prices rose close to $40 per barrel on March 7. The reduction in the output of US production increased the North American WTI crude benchmark. Brent crude which is the benchmark in the pricing of Nigerian oil increased by nearly 0.76 percent and reached some of the highest levels since early January and standing at $39.48 per barrel. The increase in the price of oil in the international market is a welcomed development for Nigeria as it should be recalled that the 2016 budget is fixed at $38 per barrel. The fall in the price of oil to $30 per barrel forced changes to be made to the country’s budget. The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced the arrest of Musa Garba Abubakar an alleged major gun fabricator and arms-runner for the Boko Haram group. The said Musa Garba Abubakar (Engr) aka Muhadis Musa Bin Haddad, was arrested at Jos, Plateau state, during a special tactical operation by the service on March 3, 2016. Some of the items reportedly recovered from him during his arrest include: two pistols, 80 rounds of live ammunition and several sensitive documents. As part of his covert operations for Boko Haram, DSS said Musa “ in a bid to employ propaganda to manipulate the international community against the efforts of the Federal Government, in the ongoing war against terror in the North-West region, MUSA had approached a foreign mission in Nigeria for logistics and financial support to fight the Boko Haram”. “However, unknown to the mission, he is actually an unauthorized gun-maker/runner with intent for mischief and communal strife in the North Central region

Lassa Fever : NYSC member dies in Kaduna State

A corps member, Dr Kelechi Ogboji, has died while treating a Lassa fever patient in Kaduna State. Punch reports that the NYSC member, who hails from Ebonyi State, was serving at the St. Louis Hospital Zonkwa in Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Confirming his death, the Director of Corps Welfare and Inspectorate, Mr Michael Ahile, described Ogboji as “an exceptional corps member who was fully dedicated to his duties and in the process paid the supreme sacrifice”, and said he will be missed by the NYSC family. Also, the NYSC DG advised corps members serving in hospitals and other health institutions to always apply ‘standard precautionary measures while discharging their duties’. Source: PUNCH

Nigerians react to ethnic clashes in Lagos between Hausas and Yorubas

Nigerians through different social media are reacting to the ongoing ethnic clash that has reportedly broken out between Hausa and Yoruba people in the Mile 12 area of Lagos state. Akinwunmi Ambode, the Lagos state governor, has directed the temporary closure of the market. The governor also announced the restriction of movement on four streets in the area. At least six people are reportedly killed while some police officers have been critically wounded by hoodlums. The Ikorodu road was reportedly blocked from Ketu at the time of filing this report. A unit of soldiers has arrived at the market to renew the peace while the market has been closed. Abductors of Lagos school girls demand N200m ransom.

Timilehin Olisa, Tofunmi Popoolaniyan and Deborah Akinayo, all SS2 students, abducted from their classroom at about 9:30pm on Monday during prep. The kidnappers, contacted the distraught father of one of the girls on Tuesday, demanding N200 million for the three girls, the Nation is reporting. After the kidnappers made contact, an emergency meeting was held between the school’s management, the victims’ anxious parents and security agencies, led by Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni. Three other meetings were held between 11am and 4:15pm with the school authorities and security agents. There are indications that   security agencies may have identified the abductors’ location. Herds men invade abi community in Enugu state.

Life has reportedly refused to return to normal in the agrarian community of Abi in Enugu state, following an attack by herdsmen at the Uzo Uwanilocal council area. Breaking Times reports that the villagers in the community are still count­ing their loses after the attack on Tuesday, February 9, from the suspected herdsmen. The attack led to the loss of lives as-well-as the destruc­tion of property worth mil­lions of naira. Sources disclose that most of the villagers no longer have a roof over their heads and live under trees because of the destruc­tion of their houses by the rampaging cattle rustlers. An unnamed eyewit­ness revealed that the terror unleashed on Abi Community by the herdsmen was occasioned by the killing of one of the herds­men who defiantly grazed his cattle in a cassava farm that belonged to the villagers.
