The protesters who blocked the expressway, causing traffic gridlock say their communities lack social amenities.
Singing solidarity songs, they urged the government to provide basic amenities in the area before the rainy season.
The leader of the group, Funsho Olawepo, warned that the protest may escalate if nothing was done in the next seven days.
He said, “The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company has
been dribbling us for the past 10 years and giving all kinds of excuses.
“But we are here to say enough is enough. We have become a
government to ourselves. We provide our own school, hospital, road,
drainage, and even police station. We bought our own transformers,
cables and poles and we have spent more than N400m and all we have been
asking them to do is to give us power and they have refused.
“We have written the federal, state and local government
without getting any response. We recently wrote to the Minister of
Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and he did not do anything.
“If in the next seven days nothing is done, we cannot predict what will happen next.”
