FIVE members of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) were yesterday allegedly shot dead by securitymen in Onitsha, Anambra State while celebrating the release by an Abuja High Court of Radio Biafra Director, their leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. The IPOB members who were jubilating at the Bridge Head in Onitsha clashed with the security operatives resulting in the death of five persons. There was tension among motorists and commuters along the busy Niger Bridge area, Enugu/Onitsha Expressway over fear of possible blockage of the Bridge Head by the IPOB members. The supporters, who on hearing about the court’s favourable verdict on Kanu converged at the statue of the late Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu- Ojukwu in a large procession from Bridge Head to the town when they were intercepted by the security operatives. A 200-level university student, John Ekefre, has been admitted into the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after policemen from the Iponri division tortured him and damaged his intestine. He was said to have been operated on to rectify the internal injury and to remove “the blood clots” that blocked his chest as a result of the torture. His elder sister, Mercy Ekefre, told our correspondent, who visited LASUTH on Tuesday that the family had spent over N200,000 on John’s treatment. “The doctor said his intestine was ruptured and that he had a blood clot. He had a surgery and we are still awaiting the medical report,” she added. It was learnt that John, an appendicitis patient who works in a cinema house in Surulere, and four other friends were going for a church programme tagged, The Experience, organised by the House on the Rock at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island, after they had closed from work around 11pm on Friday, December 4.

Vanguard gathered that the sad incident occurred weekend.  Meanwhile, when contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Muhammad said, the police was not aware of the ugly development. The late Fubara was appointed a Commissioner in the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, by Governor Nyesom Wike. It was gathered that the assassins, who stormed his Odili Road residence in Port Harcourt, first killed his second with a rod and then went for the father, clubbing him till he fell unconscious. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Katsina, has condoled with leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Yaqub Zakzaky, over the killing of its followers in Zaria by the Nigerian Army. The Christian group condemned Nigerian Government over the incident. Recall that soldiers clashed with members of the group a few days ago, leaving almost a thousand of the Islamic sect dead. The incident occurred during the visit of Nigeria’s Army Chief, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, to a military function at the Nigerian Military Depot. Iran has summoned the Nigerian Charge d'Affaires in Tehran to protest against deadly clashes between Shia Muslims in the country's north and the army. Iran's foreign ministry called the violence between the military and followers of the Shia Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) "unacceptable", the official ISNA news agency reported on Tuesday. Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif had earlier contacted his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama to express his "deep concern" about Saturday's events in the city of Zaria. ISNA said at least 12 people were killed, with both sides blaming each other. The Nigerian military said one of its convoys was attacked by followers of Ibrahim Zakzaky, the leader of the IMN.

Nigerian playwright and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has spoken on the agitation in the southeast and noted that Biafra cannot be defeated. He also defended his choice of Muhammadu Buhari as a better candidate in the last presidential election. According to Soyinka, Nigeria would not have survived four more years of former president Goodluck Jonathan’s rule. The Punch reports that the professor expressed his opinion speaking during a programme titled “Channels Book Club” on Channels Television on Tuesday, December 8. Soyinka confessed that he used to have a bad impression of Buhari and even recalled that once he described the president as a “devil for whom in my calculation, no spoon existed long enough to justify the risk even of an impromptu snack.” However, during the general election in the country Nigerian playwright weighted two presidential candidates and concluded that the nation had a better chance under Buhari.
